THE PROJECT

Recent efforts to revive the traditional craft of Mashrabiya have been gaining momentum across several regions, focusing on key initiatives such as integration into modern architecture, craft preservation programs, the use of advanced technology, cultural and heritage documentation, and urban restoration.

This archiving initiative is the result of research that started in 2019 in the field of traditional handmade crafts connected to architecture and design. The results of this effort are demonstrated in this open-source archive documenting traditional Mashrabiya patterns and craftsmanship to serve as a resource for restoration efforts and a foundation for future design innovations. This documentation aims to reference these traditional designs while focusing on their evolution accurately. Visitors can either upload or download a pattern desired in 3 different formats: .dxf, .gh, and .3dm.
